Position Summary: Test relays for accuracy. Perform preventive maintenance and unscheduled troubleshooting on relays, and other equipment. Install relay equipment and other duties as required.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: Verify proper operation and reliability of all substation equipment. Perform electrical test, calibration, and repair on 15kv and 27kv reclosers, ranging from oil circuit reclosers to microprocessor controlled/vacuum interrupter reclosers. Perform electrical tests, repair and verify proper electrical operation of 69kv to 345kv OCB's and GCB's. Test and repair load tap changer and regulator controls ranging from electromechanical to solid state. Install and verify proper operation of all types of relaying schemes for line, transformer and under-frequency. Perform settings changes requested by engineering and report any out of tolerance values or mis-operation conditions discovered. Install and maintain associated equipment; i.e. electronic recorders, pulse multipliers, and transducers. Maintain files on test records and equipment manuals. Understand all compliance requirements and necessary documentation. Install all control house fixtures and hardware associated with metering and relaying; i.e. relay panels, battery bank, cable tray, lighting, and station service equipment. Run conduit (underground and above ground) and pull and terminate all control wiring in control house and yard.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of substation equipment such as relays, meters, controls, tap changers, regulators, capacitors, reclosers, transformers, breakers, load tap changers, regulators, switches, and battery systems. Ability to operate test equipment including volt meters, ammeter, and phase angle meters. Basic computer knowledge and skills. Ability to maintain tools, equipment, and vehicle in proper working order. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, both internally and externally, and establish credibility with business partners and other stakeholders. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time/workload to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to coordinate assignments and handle multiple complex tasks concurrently. Ability to self-motivate, work independently and as part of a team. Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the job. Skill in teamwork, flexibility, member relations, analysis, and communication.
Education & Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent certificate. Two or more years of mechanical or electrical school desirable. Minimum of 3 years electrical or mechanical experience preferred. Advancement requires continuing education as deemed appropriate by Supervision through one or more of the following Brazos Electric approved sources: A) Correspondence courses, B) Technical Certification, C) Short courses and technical schools.
Physical and Environmental Requirements: Requires working outside in varying environmental and weather conditions and temperature extremes. Requires sometimes working at night. Requires lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying weight equal to 100 pounds or less. Requires pushing, pulling, and reaching above the shoulders. Requires kneeling, crawling, bending or twisting while lifting arms above shoulders and stooping for extended periods of time, in order to accomplish duties, while grasping, pulling or pushing objects or manipulating tools. Requires walking and/or standing for extended periods of times. Requires sitting for extended periods of time while riding in a motor vehicle. Requires wearing Personal Protective Equipment including breathing apparatus. Requires manual and detailed hand work using both hands. Also may require repetitive manual tasks. Requires working overtime and traveling at times with short notice. Must live within a 30 minute response time to BEPC Office for emergency response. Must be able to obtain required driver’s license within 6 month of employment. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Requires hearing within normal range, hearing aids are permitted. Requires vision within normal range, corrective lens are permitted.
