Responsible for: Planning, directing, and implementing a comprehensive safety program that ensures a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment for all EnergyUnited’s employees.
Key Accountabilities & Duties: Broad Scope
Plans, develops and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state and federal regulatory agencies rules, regulations and directives.
Plans, develops and implements programs designed to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, encompassing electrical, propane and related businesses.
Instills a Corporate Safety Culture throughout all Business Units.
Recognized as the Corporate Leader in all safety-related activities.
Prepares and provides recommendations to others regarding trends, accidents, or hazards as they relate to health and well-being of all employees.
Inspects facilities to detect existing or potential accidents or health hazards. Follow up to insure corrective measures are addressed and corrected.
Ascertains that NRECA Safety Accreditation is obtained and maintained at the highest possible level.
Provides leadership in the investigation of accidents and injuries and the preparation of material for use in both internal and external investigations.
Develop complete and accurate work plans for safety-related activities and future direction.
Develop and implement comprehensive Safety Manuals for all business entities.
Review and maintain all Safety Policies and Procedures. Develop new Safety Policies and Procedures as required.
Work closely with all members of management and operations to insure proper safety direction and attitudes are instilled, including a visible presence at field work locations.
Keep current in all areas of work related to electrical, propane, etc. to provide expertise and knowledge of state and federal mandated regulations and requirements, including but not limited to OSHA, National Electric Safety Code, DOT, NPGA, etc.
Provide input, support and leadership in all safety and related matters to develop a safety program that is highly regarded and respected.
Prepare and distribute monthly and required reports for all employees and management that indicate activities and results.
Maintain a close relationship with Operations and Management to implement and maintain an effective and constructive Safety Program for EnergyUnited.
Utilizes all available resource to accomplish desired end results. This includes establishing and implementing safety committees, recognition/reward programs, etc.
Administers and maintains EnergyUnited’s Worker’s Compensation program.
Administers and maintain all files associated with Safety, DOT, Medical, etc.
Maintains Safety training records and files.
Ascertains proficiency in electric and propane industries to provide leadership in all corporate businesses as it relates to safety.
Develops and is responsible for attaining personal goals and initiatives in line with the objectives of the department.
Contributes to the overall strategic plan.
Assists others in department as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Direct reports: Job Training and Safety Specialist.
Internal Relationships: Shall maintain internal relationships necessary to achieve purpose of position and desired results.
External Contacts: Shall maintain necessary job-related external contacts to assure satisfactory results. Act as the representative and liaison for a variety of functions and activities.
Authority: Has full authority to carry out the above responsibilities as delegated by the Director of Operations.
EDUCATION – Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Business or a related field preferred or an associates’ degree with a minimum of 10 years’ field experience with an electric utility.
EXPERIENCE – Prefer three to five years in a supervisory capacity involving Safety with demonstrated ability to plan, direct, and evaluate results for a company’s safety program. Prior experience in an electrical utility is required
KNOWLEDGE – Must have working knowledge of safety codes, standards, and regulations as they affect industries, such as Utilities, Propane, etc. Must possess a strong knowledge of instructional technique and program design and planning. Must be familiar with worker’s compensation program and impacts to industry. Proficiency in understanding safety requirements and compliance regulations is essential. Demonstrated application of root cause analysis (RCA) accident investigation techniques.
ATTITUDE – Must have a positive, open mind and considerate attitude toward the responsibilities of the position. Must be a self-starter. Must have an attitude of neatness, timeliness, orderliness and accuracy toward the job. Must possess a very conscientious attitude toward record keeping. Sense of urgency must be demonstrated.

Must be able to project a good public image. Must be able to function cooperatively with peers as a team member to meet departmental and system objectives.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS – Must have ability to implement work plans, make sound decisions from observations and carry out instructions. Must possess strong mathematical abilities and proficiency in computer applications, software. (Microsoft Office). Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines; as well as, work in harmony with many different personality types. Must be able to work with very little supervision and be proactive in responsibilities. Must possess a strong ability to communicate in both verbal and written form. Must effectively communicate with all levels of employees and in group environments. Must possess the ability to accomplish tasks through individuals who do not report directly to the incumbent.
WORKING CONDITIONS – Normal working conditions and hours of 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Irregular working hours are required due to the nature of the position. Must be available for work during adverse weather conditions.
WORK REQUIREMENTS – Must possess and maintain a valid NC driver’s license. All employees assigned to headquarters or non-direct operational positions must make their domicile within one of the nineteen counties served by the Cooperative. The incumbent is expected to work extra hours as may be required to accomplish the assigned position responsibilities.
SAFETY - Performs all assignments safely assuring compliance with all Safety related rules, regulations and policies.
EXEMPT STATUS – This position is exempt as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act as amended.
