San Miguel (www.smeci.net) is a financially sound, electric generation cooperative. It owns and operates a 400-MW mine-mouth, lignite-fired generating plant, and associated mining facilities that supplies electric service to over 244,000 consumers of the Member Systems throughout 42 counties in South Texas. San Miguel has over $152 million in annual revenue, 2019 energy sales of 2,168,000 MWhs, assets of $413 million, and 180 employees. The candidate will be a proven leader with high integrity and demonstrated leadership skills. The individual must have a strong business background, be a strategic thinker, an effective negotiator, and a good listener. Competency at building relationships and teams is a requisite. Strong oral/written communication and people skills are required. The individual must have at least 10 years’ experience in the electric utility industry, with a minimum of five years at the senior management level. Experience with a cooperative and/or electric generation is preferred. An understanding and respect of the cooperative principles and business model is essential. A comprehensive understanding of power supply planning, finance, plant operations, safety, regional electric markets, board relations, and the legislative and regulatory issues facing the utility industry is also required. The candidate must work closely and effectively with the 17-person, member-elected Board of Directors and recognize the divergent needs of their respective distribution systems. A four-year college degree in an appropriate discipline is required. San Miguel is headquartered within a 20-minute drive outside of Pleasanton, TX and is located less than an hour’s drive south of downtown San Antonio. The Gulf of Mexico, Corpus Christi, and Austin are within a two-hour drive. The economy is a mix of tourism, service, health, retail, agriculture, and industry. The cost of living is very affordable and is well below the national average. The community boasts a quality secondary education and has 18 colleges within 50 miles. The area’s recreational activities are plentiful and include boating, fresh- and salt-water fishing, hunting, golfing, hiking, and camping.
