Qualifications: Survey Technician I: To perform effectively in this position the incumbent must have a working knowledge of all types of surveys and surveying field notes, and an understanding of the differences between them. With a hand held calculator, the incumbent be able to perform basic survey computations using measurements relating to surveying including linear, angular, and vertical unit system conversions. The incumbent must be capable of operating conventional, total station equipment, global positioning systems, and interfacing the field surveying function with computerized analysis and/or drafting of survey data. This is acquired through completion of a two-year degree in land surveying or engineering technology. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of and adhere to the applicable governmental regulations and requirements, and must adhere to all state laws concerning land surveys for the development of properties. A valid North Dakota driver’s license is required. The Survey Technician I spends about 75% of their time in field, with 50% of that time requiring overnight travel, mostly by company vehicle, but occasionally by cooperative/commercial plane. This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) (FMCSA) (non-CDL) qualified position. This includes understanding rules of evidence and their application to property ownership problems, interpretation of evidence, writing of property descriptions and survey recommendations. The incumbent must be capable of operating conventional, total station equipment, global positioning systems, and interfacing the field surveying function with computerized analysis and/or drafting of survey data. This is acquired through completion of a two-year degree in land surveying or engineering technology, and two years of related surveying experience. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of, and adhere to, the applicable governmental regulations and requirements, and must adhere to all state laws concerning land surveys for the development of properties. Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands: This position requires frequent sitting and use of keyboard/computer; and occasional standing, walking, stooping/bending, climbing stairs/ladders, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, reaching, crawling, and pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds. This position must be able to operate a motor vehicle. This position requires good color vision and hearing, finger dexterity, the ability to perform close work, and the ability to speak. The incumbent must be able to analyze data/reports, conduct research, implement recommendations, develop plans, accomplish goals, present information to others, and work under pressure. This position is occasionally exposed to dirt/dust, chemicals, extreme heat/cold, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, electrical risks, confined areas, and heights up to 300 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. |
