South Central Indiana REMC (SCI REMC) is a not-for-profit electric distribution, member-owned cooperative. The cooperative is a leader in distribution technology and is headquartered in a new and progressive facility in Martinsville, Indiana. SCI REMC serves seven counties including Morgan, Monroe, Owen, Brown, Johnson, Putnam and Clay with over 3,650 miles of energized lines and 33,905 meters serving 28,512 members. SCI REMC is also in the start-up phase with the fiber division that will offer broadband services to its members’ homes and businesses.
SCI REMC has a department dedicated to tree clearance for the power line right-of-way area which currently has an opening for a Trimmer A/top climber. The main responsibilities of the position are listed below. We are looking for a person with demonstrated experience to work safely, accurately, and efficiently as a respectful team member. The successful candidate must be a dedicated and dependable individual and have the ability and knowledge to lead the crew when the Foreman is not available.

Minimum qualifications required:
Demonstrated safe climbing experience with line clearance, trimming trees and pulling overhang off three-phase power lines. Ability to trim safely by both climbing and operating a bucket. Must be proficient at climbing, performing lift operations and performing tree rescues. Must have proven tree identification knowledge. Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate with coworkers, landowner customers/members, as well as community such as police or fire department personnel in cases of blocking streets or driveways, etc.
High School Diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to work safely, follow instructions and ability to complete all required paperwork including reading and following g permission documentation and following company protocol for tree removal including communicating with the landowner about the work to be done and promotes and maintains good member and public relations.
Applicable experience in tree trimming and line clearance to ensure safe work practices and proper arboricultural trimming methods in the area around energized power lines and equipment. Currently certified or ability to obtain certification in Electrical Hazard Awareness Program (EHAP), including aerial rescue. Must be able and willing to work at heights up to approximately 50 feet frequently and 100 feet occasionally. Safeguards coworkers and the public from hazards in and around work areas. Cooperates with members, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways. Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, markers, cones etc., to protect employees and the public, following safe traffic control procedures.
Ability to understand and follow all safety procedures and complete paperwork.
Must have a Class A CDL Driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Certifications or interest to become certified with R.T., Arborist or Utility Arborists are preferred but not required.
Adverse Working Conditions –
Works outdoors the year around under adverse weather conditions, especially during emergencies, outages and sometimes when performing routine work. Works any hour of the day or night and for long periods at a time during emergencies or power outages. Is exposed to hazards of working near power equipment, traffic, high voltage wires, and falling limbs. Does considerable walking and standing involving ground conditions of deep mud, snow, swamp, and poisonous plants. May Act as contact person with members, general public, etc., is subject to attack by vicious dogs and smaller pets.
This position is classified as Very Heavy Work under the DOL classifications. Position requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds across uneven terrain. May also need to lift and move logs or branches up to 80 pounds frequently. Position is physically demanding and mobile, reaching, balancing, and crawling are daily activities.
Ability to periodically crawl beneath large equipment or trees with little ground clearance to maintain equipment.
Trimmer A must be able to ascend and descend trees that are up to 100 feet tall while maintaining safety protocol.
Safely utilize chainsaw, pole saw or handsaws, and other hand tools as needed to complete tasks.
Ability to maintain a CDL and drive company vehicles to and from worksites.
