Position Summary: To perform, under strict supervision, diversified work of constructing and repairing electric distribution facilities of all classes and voltage, including energized lines and structures and equipment involved in the distribution of electricity to provide the most economical and reliable service to member/owners while complying with SVEC safety policies and procedures. Reporting Relationships: Reports to – Operations Supervisor or Lead Lineman (as assigned) Directs – None Responsibilities and Authorities: Essential Functions of the Job - Perform, under strict supervision, diversified work including, but not limited to, the construction, installation, maintenance and removal of electric distribution lines of all classes and voltage, on both energized and de-energized lines. Perform, under strict supervision, diversified work including, but not limited to, the construction, installation, maintenance and removal of structures and equipment involved in the distribution of electricity, including, but not limited to, transformer banks, regulators, line capacitors and oil circuit reclosers on both energized and de-energized lines. Responsible for vehicle, tools, and other SVEC equipment assigned for his/her use. Assist in special projects as necessary.
Training and Experience – One year experience preferred in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electric systems or equivalent work experience. Participation in employment development and powerline training programs. Participation in SVEC job safety and training programs and other SVEC sponsored technical workshops and seminars. Attendance at other job-related technical courses and seminars is required. Successfully complete certification as a flagman under the certified program for the state of Virginia. Knowledge - A thorough knowledge of rural electrification and Cooperative principles. Knowledge of basic electricity and experience with working in a cooperative environment are preferred. Abilities and Skills - Must be able to maintain professionalism and control under all circumstances. Has and maintains valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record and be able to operate SVEC vehicles. Must become and remain certified in CPR and first aid. Must also be skilled in the use of all safety equipment. Must pass physical exam, drug & alcohol testing initially; drug/alcohol test randomly. Ability to handle the challenge of operating efficiently under a very flexible schedule due to the number of unanticipated and unplanned requests for services from the various individuals, departments and outside contacts with whom this position is involved. Leadership ability and the ability to motivate peers toward goal achievement. Strong verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to perform job responsibilities in a timely manner within established guidelines under minimal supervision. Ability to stay current on changes to all areas for which this position has responsibility. Must be of high integrity and possess good working habits. Ability to communicate effectively with fellow associates, general public, and especially member-owners, during and after hours as first responder. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s license, Class A. Must obtain and hold forklift and flagman certification in the state of Virginia. Must participate in SVEC’s scheduled On-Call program. SVEC is governed by a democratically elected 10-member board of directors. Each year, at SVEC’s annual meeting, directors are elected by members. Directors serve four-year terms.
