The Board of Directors for Wasco Electric Cooperative (WEC) is seeking a competent and enthusiastic professional for the position of General Manager (GM). The current GM will retire in the summer of 2021. WEC has retained NRECA’s Executive Search Team to facilitate the search process.
Wasco Electric Cooperative (www.wascoelectric.com) is a member-owned electric distribution utility headquartered in The Dalles, Oregon. The Cooperative is located in north central Oregon and serves 4,700 electric consumers in a service area that covers 5,000 square miles and five counties (Wasco, Sherman, Jefferson, Wheeler, and Gilliam). WEC employs a staff of 17 professionals. The cooperative is financially sound, with annual revenue of $12.0 million. Total Utility Plant is $44 million with Equity at 57%. WEC receives wholesale power from the Bonneville Power Administration and is a member of the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The Cooperative has an excellent reputation with its members and the community because of its commitment to offering excellent service.
The successful candidate must have a minimum of10 years electric utility experience, preferably within the rural electric program, and at least five (5) years of leadership experience in a senior management position. A bachelor’s degree in business administration, electrical engineering, accounting and finance, or an appropriate field is required.However, extensive electric utility experience in a senior staff position may substitute for a college degree. Candidates must have broad electric utility management experience and knowledge that includes such areas as operations and safety, finance, strategic planning, team building, and member communications. The successful candidate will be a person of integrity and have excellent people and communications skills, proven leadership ability, and a strong commitment to “Cooperative Principles”.
The Dalles is located within the beautiful Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The community and surrounding area have a unique history and heritage that dates back thousands of years. The “Gorge” was carved by the Missoula Floods during the last ice age over 15,000 years ago. The Dalles was a gathering place for many Native American tribes to trade, fish, and socialize, and remains a cultural center for many Native Americans. Lewis and Clark camped in The Dalles in both 1805 and 1806 with their expeditions paving the way for the overland Oregon Trail in 1843. Once one of the largest population centers in the Pacific Northwest, the community continues to be the economic hub for the Mid-Columbia region because of the Port of The Dalles and Interstate-84. Agriculture remains the leading industry with sweet cherries, grains, and apples leading the way.
The community is strategically located at the intersection of Interstate 84 and Hwy 197. The Dalles Bridge crosses the Columbia River allowing immediate access to southern Washington communities. Portland, Oregon is 90 miles west via I-84, and Pendleton, Oregon is 125 miles east via I-84. The Dalles is a popular destination for many recreational opportunities. Bicycling, fishing, rock climbing, hiking, swimming, boating, rafting, windsurfing, and kiteboarding are just a few of the outdoor options. Regarding schools, North Wasco County School District serves approximately 3,000 students in Kindergarten through grade 12. Three elementary schools serve grades Kindergarten through fifth; sixth through eighth grades are located at The Dalles Middle School and The Dalles High School main campus serves 9th through 12th grade. The district is a member of the 5A Columbia River Conference as part of the Oregon Schools Activities Association.
