The Renewable Energy Technician 1 position is designed to support CoServ’s renewable energy, storage, and other distributed resource initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Energy Services, the technician will support CoServ Members who desire to install solar, storage, or other distributed resources by advising Members through all aspects of the purchase and installation process; inspecting Member-owned facilities; and identifying and monitoring certified installers as well as training them on CoServ practices and policies. In addition, the technician will be responsible for supporting the operation and maintenance of all CoServ-owned renewable energy and energy storage facilities. Most importantly, the technician will monitor and help ensure the safety of all renewable energy facilities interconnected to CoServ’s distribution system.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Supports all field work and contactor/Member (customer) technical discussions regarding the installation of Member-owned renewable or distributed generation (DG) and energy storage, including:
Supports business and residential customers by performing reviews of their energy usage and the benefits and drawbacks of potential renewable energy and/or energy efficiency upgrades for individual customers or groups of customers.
Answers Member questions and inquiries pertaining to installation of Member-owned renewable or DG, such as availability of and requirements for CoServ incentives, CoServ tariffs, CoServ net metering policies, estimated production, and the impact of the estimated production on energy bills, including the return on investment.
Conducts pre-installation assessment and approvals of proposed photovoltaic (PV) system and other renewable energy system installations including review of engineering package, structural design, roof layout, equipment details, etc.
Conducts post-installation inspections of PV or other renewable energy system installations to make sure contractor has followed local and national codes (including NEC 690).
Installs correct metering based on CoServ requirements, including bi-directional distributed generation meters and/or solar production meters on all residential Member-owned generation installations.
Meets with Members, distributed and renewable generation contractors, and city officials and inspectors as needed to assist in distributed or renewable generation installations and to ensure PV systems meet all CoServ and local requirements.
Performs reviews and vetting of contractors interested in participating in the CoServ Certified Solar Installation program, train contractors on CoServ practices and policies, and answer contractor questions regarding all aspects of CoServ renewable programs.
Supports the administration of CoServ’s customer-facing renewable energy programs, including issuing and completing service orders; tracking rebate funds; and maintaining records of solar, storage, or other distributed resources on CoServ’s system:
Helps ensure Distributed Generation Master List (system inventory) is complete and up to date.
Issues, administers, and completes service orders as required.
Responds to Member inquiries using Zendesk and related tools.
Supports all operations and maintenance activities related to CoServ-owned renewable energy and energy storage facilities, including:
(With appropriate training) Performs routine photovoltaic (PV) system maintenance and repairs including but not limited to modules, arrays, combiners, inverters, and storage technologies.
Helps troubleshoot and repair switchgear, inverter, grounding and other electrical issues with assistance of CoServ’s Operations staff.
For non-routine repairs and upgrades, develops scope of work and identify, recommend, and provide oversight to renewable energy / electrical contractors to complete work.
Works with CoServ IT and Communications teams to maintain integrity of fiber communications ring around the CoServ Solar Station.
Provides tours of CoServ's community solar facility (the Solar Station) for both CoServ and external audiences, ensures safety policies are followed for tours.
Helps monitor construction and production from any utility scale renewable energy facilities for which CoServ has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Applies expertise to help continually improve and optimize CoServ’s existing renewables programs, including residential solar, community solar programs, and utility-scale power purchase agreements, and to support the implementation of new renewables or storage programs.
Develops and maintains knowledge and expertise concerning renewable generation and storage facilities and all applicable CoServ policies to be able to address customers’ technical questions and issues.
Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
Secondary Position Responsibilities
Fills in for or assists Energy Engineering Administrative Assistant as needed to maintain timely and accurate records related to CoServ renewable energy and/or demand response programs and to provide management reports.
Attends public and private meetings and events as a representative of CoServ before, during, and after working hours. These events and meetings may include but are not limited to community events, school events and exhibits, energy management events or conferences, electric utility events or conferences, CoServ-sponsored events and other related functions. Participation at such events could include renewable energy presentations Community Relations support, and/or energy efficiency demonstrations.
Conducts electric and magnetic field (EMF) inspections, prepares reports, and addresses Member questions regarding EMF or radio frequency (RF) radiation as necessary to support Members.
Reads periodicals and journals related to the industry and assigned duties; maintain awareness of new industry developments especially in the areas of renewable energy, energy storage, and energy efficiency.
Attends professional development training programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences as required to develop skills and monitor and stay informed about industry developments and trends, new technologies, and other issues or decisions which might affect Company’s objectives and policies.
Completes minimum CoServ University training requirements each year.
Maintains appropriate knowledge of CoServ Electric equipment and devices.
Represents CoServ in a professional manner at all times.
Performs other duties and activities as directed.
Education and Certification Required
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
Completion of Fundamentals of Electricity Training, Levels I - V, or equivalent.
Infrared Training Center (ITC) Level 1 Infrared Thermography certification.
Education and Certification Preferred
Bachelor’s degree, especially in a business or technical discipline.
Hold, or be working towards NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification.
Qualified Operational Status to conduct CoServ arcing demonstrations, as approved by CoServ Safety Department.
Toastmasters or similar public speaking certification.
(At least one of the following):
Minimum two (2) years’ experience in electric power distribution or utility operations, OR
Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the energy efficiency or renewable energy fields.
Knowledge of cooperative philosophy, history and objectives.
Background in the electric utility industry that includes electric operations, electric design or engineering, and/or customer service.
Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to prepare and deliver oral and written communications and presentations.
Working knowledge of National Electric Code (particularly NEC 690).
Familiarity with city, county, and state distributed generation permitting requirements.
Qualified to work safely with multiple system voltages, both AC and DC, and proficient in use of lockout / tagout procedures.
Proficiency in use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand tools, digital multimeters, and amperage and voltage meters.
Knowledge of basic mathematics with strong problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision, and in teams, in both an office and field environment.
Computer skills with proficiencies in MS Office (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe
Ability to quickly learn new software and similar applications, including software CoServ uses to issue and complete service orders, track Member inquiries, evaluate Member usage, and track distributed generation (such as NISC, GIS, and Zendesk).
Must be able to effectively utilize online resources, such as PV Watts.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
Ability to work under strict deadlines.
Ability to professionally manage and mediate conflict and to address potential Member (customer) issues in a professional, constructive way.
Ability to be mentored by more senior employees.
Knowledge and skill in utilizing the Internet for technical searches and research.
Skills and Abilities Preferred
Proficiency with software and systems used to track Member usage, billing, and distributed generation, including NISC/iVue/SmartHub, Zendesk, ArcMap, GIS, and CommandCenter.
Ability to open, generate, print, and complete Service Orders independently.
Familiarity with ZenDesk, including ability to navigate ZenDesk and respond to member inquiries through ZenDesk with minimal assistance.
Ability to safely de-energize and re-energize CoServ solar facilities, including the Solar Station, with a working knowledge of switching order.
Familiarity with a wide range of renewable energy equipment, products, and services.
Ability to work flexible or extended hours as needed or directed.
Ability to work with field and office equipment including hand tools, meters, computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.
Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
Ability to drive safely.
Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather.
Must have and maintain a valid Class C Texas Driver’s License.
Successful completion of criminal background check required by law (20-year history on felonies and 10-year history on misdemeanors).
Ability to travel, if necessary, for business and training.
