Position Summary: Patrol, inspect and report conditions of lines and substations for the purpose of maintaining service to customers in an assigned area. Perform switching of transmission and distribution equipment as directed by the Brazos System Operator. Read and maintain meter equipment. Keep records associated with assigned responsibilities. Perform other duties as required.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: Check all substation equipment for proper operation and make minor adjustments as required. Check, maintain and make reports on battery banks and other substation equipment. Use amp meter, volt meter and hot sticks in proper manner. Perform preventative maintenance on meters, recorders and substation equipment. Read and record meter and other equipment operating data in substation reports and inform responsible personnel of major problems. Inspect the condition of conductors, insulators, poles and other transmission line equipment. Perform switching substation equipment in and out of service as directed by the System Operator or in the normal performance of daily job functions. Mow in and around substations; control unwanted vegetation through proper use of chemicals, keep control houses clean. Make equipment inventory reports on assigned substations and assist in the preparation of the budget. Learn the Cooperative's safety rules, first aid procedures and proper work practices and be responsible for operating in accordance with these procedures. Maintain relationships with other Cooperative personnel, Member Cooperative Managers and field personnel, interconnected system's employees and others necessary in the performance of the job.
Education and Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent certificate. Must have completed or be able to complete Northwest Lineman College courses provided by Brazos Electric. Minimum of six (6) years related experience including duties as a Journeyman/Sr. Lineman preferred. Must have electric utility experience related to the transmission of high voltage power and possess knowledge of transformers, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, generators and other electric power equipment. Prior experience with transmission and distribution systems like the Brazos Electric System is desirable.
Physical and Environmental Requirements: This position requires working day or night, inside or outside, in varying environmental locations, in all weather conditions with temperature extremes and extreme ranges of humidity and dryness. Working with and near high voltage. Lifting, pushing pulling or carrying of weights equal to 49 pounds or less. Climbing ladders and stairs and working on elevated platforms or scaffolding. Sitting for extended periods of time while riding in a motor vehicle. Wearing personal safety equipment including breathing apparatus. Quick, calm action in response to emergency situations. Working overtime and traveling at times with short notice. Hearing within normal range, hearing aids are permitted. Vision within normal range, corrective lenses are permitted. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must reside within assigned service area.
