Responsible for building, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground power distribution lines and facilities in accordance with standards utilized by the Cooperative. Journeyman will work within the scope of his training and certification in a safe and efficient manner under the immediate leadership and direction of the Operations Manager, Crew Leader or Leadman.
Clear and accurate communication skills are essential. Knowledge of the equipment and its operation to construct and maintain energized and de-energized electrical systems is necessary. Basic knowledge of RUS line specifications, National Electric Code, National Electric Safety Codes is necessary. Must become familiar with Cooperative policies, procedures, and Safety Manual within a reasonable time span. Moderate level of general math skills desired. High School diploma and Journeyman Lineman qualification is required. A valid Illinois Class A CDL Driver’s License, CPR/First Aid certification and rubber gloving certified is required.
Responsible for ensuring the overhead and underground power distribution facilities are built, maintained, and repaired in a safe and efficient manner within accepted operations standards. Drives and operates bucket truck, digger, trencher, forklift, vac and skid steer, as necessary, to perform duties. Frames and sets poles, pulls and ties in wire, and connects and disconnects services. Inspects existing power lines looking for problems, trouble shoots issues, and retires old power lines as instructed. Responds to power outages and member service complaints in a timely manner. Provides guidance and training to personnel in lower-level apprenticeship programs. All training shall contain emphasis on safe working practices. Communicates with members, coworkers, contractors, vendors and the general public in a polite and appropriate manner as needed. Maintains current knowledge of equipment, RUS specifications, OSHA and DOT regulations, Cooperative mapping system and other operational systems related to the responsibilities of the position. Responds to power interruption reports and member service complaint tickets. Works as a Leadman when necessary. Compiles information and completes records pertaining to major materials and equipment taken from inventory, warehouse and yard. Assures job-site compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and P.C.B. spills, as needed. Experience in the use of mobile devices preferred. Applicant will be required to live within a 15-mile radius of Cooperative headquarters. Applicant will be covered under the IBEW Local 51 bargaining agreement.
Exposure to varying temperature conditions including cold below 32 degrees F and heat above 100 degrees F. Heavy work requiring exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Job requires standing, climbing, bending, pulling and reaching majority of the time. This is a safety sensitive position and employees are subject to drug testing. Subject to call 24 hours per day, including weekends and holidays. Subject to long periods of work in all types of weather.
