Purpose of Job:
The Network Administrator, positioned in the Glen Allen, Virginia office, supports the local and wide-area communications network across the ODEC enterprise. Network support includes, but is not limited to, planning, developing, installing, configuring, testing, modifying, maintaining, and supporting all network connections, associated software, and communications links. This individual applies proven communication and problem-solving skills to support the IT community to ensure the network infrastructure meets planned business needs. Monitors, maintains, supports, and ensures optimization of all network equipment, software, and communication links, and analyzes and resolves IT communications issues in a timely and accurate manner.
Essential responsibilities include:
Network Support – Designing, implementing, and reviewing local and wide-area IT communications networks.
Working closely with Senior Network Administrator, vendors, and service providers on maintenance support requests for communications equipment, software, and service – opening support tickets, and responding to requests for additional information. Following up with appropriate business units when significant impact to the business is necessary.
Monitoring and identifying capacity and performance issues for network traffic to ensure continued, uninterrupted operation; forecasting capacity for meeting future business needs by analyzing historical and recent trends in network traffic.
System Security - Prioritizing defense initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of security technologies.
Business Continuity – Participating in disaster recovery planning, implementation, and testing to confirm appropriate system recovery capabilities or detect faults and perform remediation.
Financial Management responsibilities.
Work Experience:
3 years hands-on experience with network management software (e.g., Cisco ACS), hardware (e.g., Cisco routers, switches), protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, ICCP, DNP, FTP) and standards, including MPLS and cellular required
3 years experience managing system life cycle required - requirements, evaluation, selection, design, development/ configuration, implementation, user acceptance testing, and operation of software solutions
3 years system implementation management experience required
1 year project planning and management experience required
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Effective communicator
Ability to effectively and professionally interact with various people and personalities
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
SCADA RTUs, real-time/operation and revenue-quality metering, communications networks, ICCP (inter-control center communications protocol) working knowledge, preferred
Contract negotiation and management; software licensing, hardware procurement, and consulting service acquisition experience, preferred
Utilities industry experience, especially generation, transmission, and distribution, preferred
Education: Four-year college degree in Information Systems or equivalent experience
Travel details: Occasional travel required
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Ability to enter data, look at a computer monitor for long periods of time, interact effectively with others through verbal communication, video and email, work full days (8 hours) in an office environment with occasional evening and weekend work. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle to occasionally travel within a 3-hour radius to include overnight stays. Must be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
