We have a great opportunity for a Principal Engineer to work with our System Engineering team at the Gainesville, Virginia location. This position will lead technical efforts in the development and modification of standards, planning studies and system protection applications which are required to upgrade and maintain the performance and reliability of the NOVEC electric system. This position will: lead the technical effort in the engineering of interconnections required to support the integration of large customer loads and new electric generators and storage to the NOVEC electric system; take a leadership role in the technical development of department engineers and technical staff; represent NOVEC in communications with internal and external stakeholders; and take a lead role in the technical development of the NOVEC electric infrastructure work plans and work plan budget.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develops standards and best practice guidelines and performs consultation and training on highly complex and unique technical areas requiring the application of advanced engineering principles.
- Performs engineering analyses and development of complex designs for interconnecting electric generators, renewable energy sources and large load interconnections to the electric system.
- Leads the implementation of large specialized technical projects.
- Leads in the development of planning strategies and planning studies of the electric system and provide detailed recommendations for addressing any identified limitations or risk or for making electric system efficiency and operating improvements
- Develops and oversees capital projects and related expenditures relating to electric infrastructure development and improvements.
- Makes technical and engineering determinations to inform NOVEC management positions on industry related matters and present these positions to internal management and external parties.
- Acts as an expert witness and provide expert opinions for regulatory and/or legal proceedings.
- Independently makes technical judgments and assumptions as a subject matter specialist. Perform reviews of work product and analyses performed by third party consultants or the internal teams assigned to solve a problem or promote technology use.
- Prepares technical training material, conducts in-house technical seminars, and recommends technical training programs for department engineers and technical staff.
- Represents and articulates the NOVEC position on matters related to electric system infrastructure at public hearings, community gatherings and before regulatory bodies.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer. Ten years or more of utility related experience in engineering analysis, planning, and design of electric systems.
Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical systems with the knowledge and ability to apply problem solving techniques to create engineering solutions to complex problems.
Industry expertise with the ability to participate in industry committees and working groups or has published technical documents
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with people and projects.
Superior written and verbal communication skills.
Possess the ability to use analytic and/or engineering software.
