Purpose of Job:
The Systems Specialist II will work out of the Glen Allen, Virginia office and be responsible for optimizing the organization’s VM and physical servers, Operating System Software, and Storage Area Network to achieve high performance of supported business applications. This individual will ensure that the infrastructure meets existing and planned business needs through effective communication and problem-solving skills with the user and IT community. This person will assist with managing network accounts and user access privileges and collaborate with other IT staff to support server and data storage replication to disaster recovery site and tape backup process for offsite storage.
Essential responsibilities include:
Infrastructure Management – Support implementation, review of server and storage systems processes, including software and hardware; support capacity planning
System Security - Prioritize defense initiatives and coordinate the evaluation, deployment, and management of security technologies.
User Support and PC Management
Troubleshoot and resolve issues
Maintain effective communication with users
Develop scripts for automating software installation; create software packages for deployment via Active Director; configure and test new systems management tools and add on modules
Business Continuity - Participate in disaster recovery planning, implementation, and testing to confirm appropriate system recovery capabilities for supported applications
Participate in and contribute to IT Department Meetings
3 years’ experience with system life cycle
3 years’ experience with storage management technology (e.g. SAN)
3 years’ experience with server management technology (e.g. VMWare)
3 years’ experience with MS Windows Server OS
3 years’ experience with MS Windows Client OS
3 years’ experience with MS Active Directory
2 years’ system implementation experience
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to effectively and professionally interact with various people and personalities
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools preferred
Utilities industry, especially generation, transmission, and distribution preferred
Project planning and project management preferred
Experience in contract negotiation and management, software licensing, hardware procurement and consulting service acquisition preferred.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or equivalent experience
Travel details: Occasional travel required
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Ability to enter data using hand/eye coordination; look at a computer monitor for long periods of time; interact effectively with others through verbal communication, video, email and text; and work full days (8 hours) in an office environment with occasional evening and weekend work.
