The Broadband Design Technician assists the BEC Communications Department in providing pre-construction contacts, contracts, easements, planning, and design for reliable, safe and economical line extensions, removals, changes, improvements, and maintenance.
Essential Functions of Position:
Position involves a combination of indoor and outdoor activities. Outdoor activities include exposure to various weather conditions including heat, high humidity, cold, wind, fog, rain, lightning, hail, sleet, snow, and ice for extended periods of time.
Observes safety rules and practices and recommends to fellow workers the use and practice of the same.

Coordinates the preparation of cost estimates, contracts, design, easements, acquirement of material, staking of line, staking sheets, and other documentation, as required.
Designs member extensions for maximum economic benefit, ease of maintenance, safety, code/regulation compliance, customer and property-owner satisfaction. Computer software will be utilized to supplement this duty.
Documents observed substandard construction or defects on the system. Must consult with Supervisor for Corrective Action guidance.
Accurately reads and interprets maps, circuit diagrams, map scales, and map legends.
Collects data associated with BEC’s mapping system.
Identifies primary and alternate routes for system facilities taking into account equipment size, weather and road conditions.
Inspects and maintains all vehicles, tools and equipment in accordance with BEC policies and procedures.
Acquires, maintains and returns material in accordance with BEC policies, procedures and inventory control procedures.
Possesses working knowledge of Electric Utility Construction Specifications (RUS-preferred), NEC, NESC, federal, state, and local codes and regulations.
Complies with all BEC policies and procedures, safety rules, RUS specifications, NEC, NESC, and federal, state, and local regulations and codes.
Possesses working knowledge of Geometry and Trigonometry to determine line angles and strain loading.
Possesses working knowledge of surveying and designing routine overhead and underground lines, taking into account voltage drops, electric and strain loading, clearances, codes, regulations, policies, easements, impact on property-owners, economic viability and reliability.
Possesses working knowledge of cost-estimating, contracts, design, easements, acquisition of materials, line design, staking sheets, and other applicable documents.
Possesses working knowledge of single- and three-phase electric motors, including voltage, amperage, impact of imbalance, impact of locked rotor amperage, actual loading compared to name-plate loading, power factor, and interpretation of connection diagrams.
Possesses working knowledge of fiber distribution, including strand and buffer tube counts, splicing, light loss factors, splitters, splice enclosures, and interpretation of connection diagrams. Also possesses working knowledge of backbone, lateral and drop line fibers and road routes on system, considering equipment size, weather conditions and road conditions.
Possesses working knowledge of modeling mapping and inventory of the BEC system and the computer hardware and software required to perform these tasks.
Must possess knowledge of, or demonstrate the ability to learn, various computer applications, including BEC’s design software and member information and work order system. This includes Microsoft Office spreadsheets and word processing.
Accurately and legibly completes all documentation in accordance with BEC policies and procedures.
Operates all BEC equipment in accordance with BEC policies and procedures, safety rules, manufacturer guidelines and regulations and/or codes.
Performs the design of assigned System Work Plan projects in a timely, safe and efficient manner. Coordinates and completes all related activities.
