The Payroll Specialist will manage and oversee payroll including but not limited to processing payroll and maintaining the employee database. Due to the nature of this position, the employee is also expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax and wage laws, as well as common fiscal procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
a) Implement, maintain, and review payroll processing to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions.
b) Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates (including but not limited to new hires, terminations, and employee changes related to payroll)
c) Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices
d) Meets deadlines for payroll and processes month end in a timely manner so that reports can be provided to close out the month.
e) Good working knowledge of accepted accounting standards, policies, and procedures.
f) Keep track of leave time, such as vacation, personal, and sick leave, for employees.
g) Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll issues or concerns
h) Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors
i) Provides management with meaningful and timely reports and information.
j) File, organize, scan, and maintain all payroll records.
k) Preserves confidentiality of Cooperative issues when relating to staff, consumer/members and general public.
l) Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience – High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/ Business Administration/ Human Resources or related field preferred (or a combination of relevant work experience and education)
Demonstrated knowledge of the payroll function including but not limited to preparation, balancing, internal control and payroll taxes.
Experience with the taxation of salaries, benefits, and other payroll related deductions.
Experience with budget analysis, financial statements, general ledgers and other accounting activities are essential.
Ability to create and perform internal audit procedures.
Demonstrate analytical traits and ability to assist in studying and interpreting trends in the operations of the Cooperative and recommend improvements that can be made.
Possess the ability to understand information systems and the skill to coordinate this with good internal accounting control.
