Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) has an immediate opening for a Power System Controller II to work at our headquarters located in Pahrump, Nevada.
Valley Electric Association, Inc., (VEA) is a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, Nevada, with a certified service area covering more than 6,800 square miles in Nevada and California. VEA presently provides service to over 24,000 services with 2,120 line miles of distribution facilities and 13 substations. VEA is a participating transmission owner and load serving entity in the California Independent System of Operators Corporation (CAISO).
VEA is the parent company to a host of wholly-owned subsidiaries, including Valley Electric Transmission Association (VETA), Valley Communication Association (VCA), Valley Electric Services Company (VESC), and Valley Electric Energy Services (VEES).
VCA (Valley Communications Association), is a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Pahrump, NV, and will offer commercial and residential optical fiber broadband service, with speeds up to 1 gigabit, to VEA members throughout Nevada.
The Power System Controller II is responsible to operate the Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA) distribution system and the Valley Electric Transmission Association, LLC (VETA) transmission systems as a NERC-certified system operator to provide optimal reliability for our members and customers. Operate third party owned power system(s) per VEA/VETA contracts.

Experience: Five years of experience at a utility with emphasis on operation of power systems or any equivalent or related combination of education, training, and/or experience, with a minimum of two years of experience as a Power System Controller or dispatcher.
Knowledge: Excellent knowledge of switching procedures, lockout / tagout procedures, clearance procedures, and OSHA regulations regarding these procedures. Develop thorough knowledge of VEA’s electric transmission and distribution system. Familiar with the National Electric Safety Code. Knowledge and competency in applicable NERC/WECC Reliability Standards for system operation. Knowledge and competency in all VEA operating procedures under normal and emergency conditions. Knowledge and competency in all VEA reliability-related tasks under normal and emergency conditions. High computer literacy, with a thorough knowledge of SCADA and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).
Abilities and Skills: Ability to direct and monitor the work of operating personnel. Flexibility and ability to work rotating shift schedules. High level of multi-tasking abilities. Understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Must be able to use independent judgment in problem solving. Ability to read and interpret technical information and documents. Write routine reports and correspondence. Above average mathematical aptitude required. High level of communication skills and reasonable mechanical aptitude also required.
