Job Summary:
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is seeking a dedicated individual that develops, implements and manages the administration of KIUC’s environmental, health and safety (EHS) policies, management systems and activities to ensure safe and environmentally competent operations, including compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT) and other EHS regulations. Acts as the authority in all areas of KIUC’s operations relative to EHS regulations and compliance. Ensures that incidents, accidents and injuries are correctly investigated and documented and that claims are managed in a timely and cost effective manner. Responsible for the development, training and exercising of KIUC’s quality emergency response plans.
Position Responsibilities:
Oversees safety programs for all employees. Supervises and ensures that KIUC is in compliance with government standards and regulation including but not limited to DOT, OSHA regulations, EPA requirements, hazardous chemical communication regulations, etc. Recommends corrective action when unsafe acts or conditions are observed. Responsible for the investigation of accidents and near-miss accidents.
Responsible for the preparation and coordination of the cooperative to assure qualification for the NRECA Safety Accreditation program. Keeps informed about environmental, health and safety and security trends. Prepares monthly safety activity and status report for the Chief of Operations. Works with the Safety Committees to review and implement changes and updates to the Safety Manual.
Directs, conducts and schedules training programs for employees including but not limited to CPR, first aid, defensive driving, hazmat communication, HAZWOPER and other training as required. Informs employees about environmental, health and safety programs and updates employees about compliance and risk management annually.
Keeps the President & CEO, Chief of Operations, and Managers informed concerning the overall status of Environmental, Health & Safety programs and immediately informs them of any serious injuries, vehicle accidents, and property damage. Ensures that employees are informed and trained in KIUC EHS procedures and rules. Informs Managers when safety violations are observed and works with supervisors to ensure that corrective action is taken.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience is required
A major or minor in Occupational Safety and Health discipline is desired
Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the electrical utility industry relating to environmental, health, and safety issues and insurance administration
Must have working knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations and The National Electric Safety Code
Excellent communication and human relations skills to work and interact with internal and external customers in a professional and cooperative manner
