Sunflower Electric Power Corporation is a generation and transmission utility serving central and western Kansas. Join our team as a Laboratory Technician Trainee at Holcomb Station, our 349-megawatt coal-fired power plant just south of Holcomb, Kansas. The successful applicant will receive extensive, on-the-job training to support the laboratory functions including performing various chemical and physical lab processes and procedures. Lab Technician Trainees also operate and maintain plant equipment safely and efficiently under the supervision of qualified personnel. You will learn something new every day, get to adapt to changes, and constantly gain more knowledge. You’ll begin in a Trainee position with a day shift schedule, then progress to higher level positions and eventually a rotating shift schedule.

Many Sunflower positions are part of a training program, which requires employees to promote through the department upon completion of training and testing. This position will advance from a Laboratory Technician Trainee ($33.35) through a Laboratory Technician II ($43.50). Employees in the training program have twenty-four months to progress through each level.

Qualifications: 

• One year of post high school education in a science field and two years practical water treatment equipment and analytical testing methods experience in an industrial environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of laboratory testing and analytical processes and procedures.
• Successful completion of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) Test.

EEI Testing:

We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. We strongly encourage candidates to review all the information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests, available here: https://secure.eei.org/eeitests/onlineproducts/Login.aspx.

The username and password are both sunflower. Practice tests provide sample questions and detailed discussions of the correct answers. It's important to take the practice test as you would the actual one, with similar intensity and concentration. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.

Note: EEI does not allow access to the actual tests. Testing sessions are held at various locations.
