The primary function of the CoServ Energy Supply Analyst is to obtain relevant data and perform various quantitative analyses that will support the wholesale power supply and gas supply activities of CoServ’s Energy Resources team. The analyst will play an important role in validating and evaluating CoServ’s wholesale power and gas supply costs, in addition to helping assess and implement business initiatives involving renewable energy, battery storage, demand response, and other distributed resources and new technologies. The analyst will be a key member of a small team that manages wholesale power supply for CoServ Electric and gas supply for CoServ Gas, with an annual portfolio value of several hundred million dollars.
This position will be ideal for someone who enjoys new challenges and finding creative ways to improve utility power and gas supply operations. The position requires both big picture thinking and focused analysis, and the successful candidate will have opportunities to engage in multiple aspects of utility strategy. Primary Position Responsibilities
Analyzes market trends and pricing for natural gas and wholesale electricity.
This may involve compiling ERCOT market gross load, net load, outage, price, and related data and developing correlations between prices and market conditions.
Develops and improves various Excel and other reports that assess power/ gas market dynamics and quantify CoServ’s daily position comparing expected load or consumption to available supply.
Maintains detailed reports and records of CoServ’s wholesale power and natural gas supply transactions.
Reviews and validates ERCOT and counterparty invoices and settlement statements to ensure amounts are correct and match internal cost calculations.
Creates, maintains, and continually improves financial models and other tools to accurately monitor, report on, and forecast CoServ wholesale energy costs.
Prepares energy supply budgeting and performance reports and presentations; conducts presentations to CoServ’s leadership as required.
Works with CoServ Power Supply Advisors to analyze CoServ historical loads and develop power and gas supply load / consumption forecasts.
Provides analyses and recommendations for short and long-term energy purchases.
Works in a team environment and participates in daily Energy Resources operations.
Participates in daily strategy meetings and calls to decide on short-term transactions and other hedges to provide sufficient supply to match CoServ’s expected load.
Participates in the development of CoServ’s longer term energy supply strategy.
Secondary Position Responsibilities
Performs economic analyses to assess the viability of new business initiatives involving renewables, distributed resources, or other new technologies.
Conducts research and analysis to maintain knowledge of the ERCOT market.
Monitors CoServ practices and market outcomes and recommends opportunities for continuous improvement.
Collaborates with other teams and manages requests and projects involving various CoServ departments and outside resources.
Attends workshops and conferences as required to monitor and stay informed about industry developments and trends, new technologies, and other issues or decisions which might affect Company’s objectives and policies.
Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Education and Certifications Required
High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in business, math, science, or related field.
Demonstrated proficiency in computers, including Microsoft Excel.
Education and Certifications Preferred
Knowledge of energy industry, especially wholesale power and/or gas markets.
Knowledge of rate making concepts and calculations.
Experience Required
Five (5+) or more years of business experience including analytics, technology, engineering, product development, and/or business development.
Experience Preferred
Three (3+) or more years in the electric utility industry, including power generation, distribution, or related fields.
Experience in multiple aspects of utility operations including power supply, risk management, finance, rate making, engineering, etc.
Knowledge of cooperative philosophy, history, and objectives.
