About
Oneida-Madison Electric Cooperative, Incorporated (OMEC) started out in July of 1941 as just an idea, going by the name short lived given name: Oneida County Electric Association. Over more than 7 decades, the utility has evolved into a full service electric distribution utility known locally for reasonable prices, excellent customer service, good reliability and honest handshake-style business. After overcoming the many difficulties of serving rural areas that no other electric utility would serve in the 1940s and 1950s, OMEC members are now the envy of many electricity consumers in nearby rural areas of Oneida County, New York and Madison County, New York. Over the utility’s first 76 years of operation, the Cooperative has gradually matured from a state of financial chaos and strains, to a wonderful position of rock solid financial strength and stability. A low budget power system has now become a very modern power grid built to meet the expectations of the 21st century and beyond.
Today
OMEC owns and operates about 250 miles of high voltage circuits, mostly overhead, which serve 2000 or so retail end-user accounts. The Cooperative’s work is... done by 7 full time employees and a powerful network of partnerships with other “cooperative style” businesses and forward thinking organizations such as the New York Association of Public Power. Its future is very bright like the gorgeous rural areas featuring farms, wind turbines, and rolling hills where it serves to the best of its ability based out of its centrally located headquarters facility in Bouckville, New York. Nearby Colgate University and Morrisville State College add greatly to the quality of life for OMEC’s membership by providing jobs, pride, diversity, and action. Bouckville, New York is also one of America’s “antique capitals” and draws in thousands of folks each summer to buy and sell all sorts of interesting goods, including ones for all budgets.
Members of the Oneida-Madison Electric Cooperative are overwhelmingly residential by nature, with the exception of a few small businesses, an equine rehabilitation center, and a world class “woodshop” where amazing furniture has been produced for years. Many beautiful waterfront and waterview homes are scattered about portions of Lake Moraine, Eatonbrook Reservoir, Lebanon Reservoir, Leland Pond, and Bradley Brook Reservoir – places which are thought by many to be paradise in real life. OMEC’s mission is to support all of the good that already blesses its members, and to improve to the best of its ability what needs improving. The Cooperative welcomes conversation and visits from organizations and individuals with an interest in learning about the Cooperative and the region it serves. By car, Bouckville is located about 40 miles from Syracuse, New York, about 20 miles from Utica, New York, about 60 miles from Ithaca, New York, about 170 miles from New York City, about 40 miles from Lapeer, New York, about 60 miles from Bovina Center, New York and about 2,740 miles from Marina Del Rey, California.
