Job Summary: The Staff Engineer is to assist in planning, coordination, construction, operation, maintenance, and design of the electric transmission system. The employee in this position is expected to establish a broad knowledge of N.W.’s assets, N.W.’s GIS system, PLS-CADD design software, and Project Management.
Reports to: Manager of Engineering – Transmission
Duties and Responsibilities:
Works with Geographic Information Systems and asset management software to maintain accurate records of N.W.’s transmission assets.
Assists with developing, drafting, and updating technical drawings using AutoCAD.
Assists with environmental services, ROW acquisition, transmission design, contract specifications, construction, inspection, and accounting closeouts of transmission projects.
Assists with planning, design, coordination, materials specification, and other general engineering to support transmission crew day-to-day work.
Assists in the development and documentation of operational procedures, short and long-range work plans, and other written plans and procedures.
Assists with the organization of paper and electronic records.
Assists in the implementation of annual department work plans and compliance with budgetary limitations.

Working Conditions: While most of the employee’s work will take place in a climate-controlled office environment, there is potential for outside work as well, which could potentially expose the employee to temperature extremes, precipitation, and other weather conditions, as well as job site hazards. Occasional travel for training and meetings may take place, as well as work outside of normal working hours, which may be irregular and on short notice. Employees in this position will also be exposed to energized lines and substations.
Interaction: This employee will have regular interaction with the Manager of Engineering – Transmission, but will also interact with the Substation Superintendent, Line Superintendent, Staff Engineers, Operations Engineers, Dispatchers, Line, Substation, Communications, and Accounting department personnel, landowners, renters, general public, employees from other utilities, and salesmen.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
Experience: Training in AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems and PLS-CADD, though not required, is desirable.
Job Skills and Competencies:
Must possess an effective working knowledge of civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering, computer applications and the ability to acquire an effective working knowledge of REA specifications, applicable federal and state regulations, and construction methods and maintenance requirements for transmission lines.
Experience with AutoCAD.
Experience with GIS software.
Proficiency in computer usage and an ability to learn and understand various software applications (Microsoft Word and Excel).
