To perform a variety of technical and skilled duties as needed in the development and implementation of substation relaying systems; conduct a variety of engineering studies. Associated responsibilities include system planning functions, development of periodic construction work plans, and designing distribution overcurrent protection systems.
All tasks are to be carried out within Cooperative established guidelines to ensure the fair and efficient extensions of the company’s distribution system so that members will have reliable and affordable service now and in the future which will in turn increase satisfaction and promote goodwill between the Cooperative, its employees and members.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

is not intended to include all responsibilities of this position but an outline of tasks indicative of the overall function of this job. Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:
System Studies include, but are not limited to:
Fault current
Voltage regulation
Load flow & load balance
Capacity studies
Feeder back-feeding
Transformer failure
Capacitor placement
Voltage reduction
Load curtailment
Annual load projections
Construction Work Plan Development and implementation related functions include, but are not limited to:
Utilizing system studies, load projections and other resources to develop system upgrade project lists;
Identifying transmission, distribution and substation projects needed to meet the projected system loading requirements and include justifications, descriptions and projected cost;
Producing a project scope, estimate, and schedule for each project;
Coordinating and managing the CWP implementation and;
Ensuring accurate cost accounting and reporting on the progress as needed;
Coordinating as needed with consultants to complete and package the CWP;
Participating in NCEMC/Progress/SREMC meetings as needed.
Performing work on energized and de-energized equipment;
Assisting in establishing yearly department goals;
Preparing assigned reports;
Supporting departmental operations/goals and contributing to improved cost; quality, productivity and/or competitive position for the Cooperative;
Completing annual personnel goals assigned by management;
Assisting in training of new personnel;
Participating and assisting with the Cooperative’s Annual Meeting, as needed;
Reporting problems and conditions/situations; which warrant immediate resolution; promptly to management;
Attending scheduled meetings (responsible for attending at least 85% of weekly safety meetings);
Personal productivity and adherence to schedules and deadlines for assigned work;
Providing assistance to other departments as needed and helping maintain good company morale;
The ability to file, maintain records and uphold confidentiality and security;
Keeping assigned work area clean, neat and organized at all times;
Understanding and personally performing all duties in accordance with applicable safety and Cooperative policy manuals, as well as report to Supervisor hazardous conditions and needed maintenance in the office;
Performance of related duties as assigned or necessary;
EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a focus in power system studies is required. Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum three (3) years of experience working with and modeling electric distribution systems is preferred.
Will except college courses in electric system modeling and basic system studies in lieu of experience.
JOB KNOWLEDGE
Working knowledge of engineering software of power system calculations and analysis required. Knowledge of utility
practices and procedures essential to maintain a safe work environment for worker(s) and the public; understands power distribution processes and electrical system components; familiar with power system expansion planning and overcurrent protection, recognizes applicable safety standards and regulations including NESC; utilizes various computer programs and related hardware. Should have a good understanding of the principles and practices of power transmission and distribution systems. Experience with personal computer required. Must work towards having full knowledge of the Cooperative’s programs, all duties and requirements associated with the position.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Must be able to maintain complete confidentiality in the performance of duties and responsibilities of the job. Skilled in the safe use of handheld electrical tools, volt /amp meter, breaker and relay testing equipment, mechanical tools, laptop computer. Ability to read and comprehend manuals, blueprints, wiring diagrams, instructions, etc.; keep operating records and prepare reports; perform general mathematical calculations, i.e. power quantities, percentages, etc.; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public. Must have good written and oral communication skills, good decision-making skills, good mathematical skills, and multitasking skills. Should be able to communicate information over the phone. Must have considerable skill in effectively dealing with a variety of people under different and sometimes difficult circumstances. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, have basic computer skills, and should be familiar with other general office equipment. Must be able to organize and carry out delegated work and handwriting must be neat and legible.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Required to pass a physical examination and drug test when employed. Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job, which include, but are not limited to: talking, seeing, hhearing, walking, complex eye and hand dexterity sitting, bending, lifting. This position may require occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 80 pounds and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and creative problem solving.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid and insurable NC Driver’s License.
Must be willing to accept on-call & call-out assignments, as necessary
WORK CONDITIONS
Incumbents of the position perform mostly in an indoor environment but can also be required to work in an outdoor physical environment and can be exposed to changing weather conditions. Daily travel is required in the normal course of job performance. Hazards common to working around high voltage power systems exist.
This position may qualify for work-from-home status on a minimal basis but must be approved by direct supervisor.
This position may qualify for a Flex Schedule but must be approved by the direct Supervisor.
