Scope of the Role:
The Controller oversees all business functions of the Finance & Accounting department and works closely with the CFO and Manager of Accounting. This position reports directly to the CFO and helps to ensure maintenance of timely, complete, and accurate financial records. The Controller collaborates with the CFO on financial forecasting and planning to support strategic business decisions while maintaining the financial health of the cooperative.
The Controller leads the department while encouraging and inspiring engagement, development, and growth through personal behaviors that demonstrate alignment with PNGC’s mission and guiding principles. This position must foster cross-functional partnerships with other departments and bring enthusiasm to team environments. The Controller position requires a high degree of personal integrity, sound judgement, and confidentiality.
Essential Job Functions:
Perform both short-term and long-term financial modeling and planning to help support and drive informed business decisions.
Prepare, monitor, analyze, and evaluate counterparty credit risk assessments and exposure.
Primary lead for all business functions of the Finance & Accounting department. Direct supervisor of the Manager of Accounting.
Develop, prepare, analyze, and interpret internal financial reporting to assist with the management of department projects, operations, and reporting.
Provide and present financial reports, charts, metrics, to Leadership Team and the Board of Directors.
Prepare, develop, and implement effective and efficient financial controls and internal control procedures.
Support in the preparation and development of the annual budget and assist in providing comprehensive variance analysis to department managers and the Board of Directors.
Support and ensure timely and accurate accounting and general reporting including development and maintenance of all required general reports to meet the needs of the Cooperative, Leadership Team, and other departments.
Be an organizational leader for the team to ensure staff is developed and successfully performing their roles while positively impacting the culture.
Responsible for communicating, empowering, and advocating for department issues and needs to the CFO.
Position Knowledge and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance.
Experience as a Controller or in a comparable position.
10-15 years’ experience specializing in accounting and/or finance.
Utility and/or cooperative experience preferred.
Effective working knowledge of accounting practices, processes, internal controls, and financial reporting and analysis.
Proven skills in financial modeling, forecasting, planning, budgeting, business case and risk analysis. Must be able to analyze data, identify financial and industry trends, and help drive business decisions. Extensive excel knowledge and skills are required.
Proven leader with skills in training, motivating, and evaluating personnel to achieve the highest degree of productivity and the development of skills and capabilities.
