Under the supervision of the Manager of Finance & Accounting, oversee accounting operations and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting for our organization. The position will require a strong background in accounting and finance. As an Accounting Controller, you will be responsible for reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and compliance with all regulatory requirements and other duties as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Duties:
Shall maintain the cooperative’s accounting system by ensuring compliance with all RUS, Federal, and State guidelines, regulations, and board–approved financial policies.
Assign and coordinate work, and lead, direct, and motivate accounting personnel for the efficient use of manpower and equipment.
Work with consultants, auditors, contractors, etc., by providing the necessary information, reports, and records.
Maintain a systematic filing and retention system of all accounting records.
Evaluate and recommend investment and financing options for both the short and long term.
Prepare and analyze financial statements and year-end reports.
Coordinates and completes the process for loan applications and contracts as necessary.
Develop and implement accounting and operating programs, including equipment, space needs, and budget.
Have a thorough knowledge of the cooperative’s personnel and other policies that affect his / her work.
Make recommendations concerning the cooperative’s Accounting / Finance practices and procedures to the Manager of Finance & Accounting.
Keep abreast of current events, technology, and information that may affect his / her department, the cooperative, or electric utilities in general.
Coordinate Accounting / Finance activities with other cooperative activities to achieve an efficient and effective operation.
Work in confidence with the Manager of Finance & Accounting in unique and unusual situations.
Provide our members and others with prompt, courteous service that results in good member and public relations.
General Duties:
Establishes and maintains an effective professional working relationship with co-workers and all necessary levels of management.
Maintains a professional image and standards of professional conduct at all times while working in the public, representing the Cooperative, and/or conducting business on behalf of the Cooperative.
Plans, schedules, and coordinates tasks, events, and activities with the Manager of Finance & Accounting to ensure that all work is completed within the necessary allocated time.
Scans, indexes, and files all required records in a manner by which they can be easily retrieved upon request by management.
Makes his/herself available to answer phone calls, provide general assistance, and provide updates to the public during power outages.
Maintains a safe working environment.
Protects and maintains member confidence by safeguarding member and employee information.
Provides service to members and fellow employees by answering questions, offering assistance, and performing other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and/or Finance is required; a Master’s Degree in Accounting or Certified Public Accountant is preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE: Required five (5) years of experience in general accounting, with exposure to accounts payable, receivables, property, tax, cost, and consumer accounting. Prior Cooperative accounting required. Required only two (2) years of experience if the individual holds a master’s degree in accounting or is a Certified Public Accountant.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have a thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Must have a thorough knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, plant accounting and payroll, financial reporting, budget planning, and forecasting.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS: Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, and strong organizational, planning, and direction skills. Must be able to motivate and encourage team members. Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks following different techniques and procedures. Must be detail-oriented and accuracy-oriented. Must be able to adapt to a work environment that requires the knowledge to learn and implement new technology. Must have the ability to develop and recommend computer applications of business procedures in accounting. Computer skills must include competency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Must work well individually and with others. May be required to travel to attend meetings, seminars, etc., which are related to specific job functions. The individual should be able to handle occasional high-pressure situations.
