The Line Worker assists and participates in all phases of electric line work under the supervision of a Senior Line Worker or Foreman. Responsibilities include constructing, maintaining, and repairing the cooperative’s overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems. Duties include installing transformers, regulators, capacitors, and other line equipment, and working from poles or bucket trucks as needed. The position requires adherence to all BCEC, OSHA, NEC, NESC, RUS, and safety standards. Line workers are subject to being called out for outages and must ensure reliable service while maintaining excellent member and public relations.
Incoming Line worker: Each line worker will be tested into the Big Country Electric Cooperative Journeyman Line Worker Program by taking a computer-based knowledge test and a field performance evaluation. Once the results are compiled and considered, along with previous job experience, the line worker will be placed at a classification level before any offer of employment is made.
Applicants should have a thorough understanding of electrical line materials, equipment, and construction standards, along with knowledge of safety procedures and hazards associated with line work. The position requires the ability to read and follow maps, staking sheets, work orders, and safety manuals. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain certifications in CPR, first aid, bucket rescue, and pole-top rescue, and be skilled in operating safety and heavy equipment such as digger and bucket trucks. A valid commercial driver’s license with an insurable driving record is required. Candidates must pass a physical exam and drug screening and be able to meet the physical demands of the job, including climbing poles and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
