The Fiber Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and coordinating the construction of fiber distribution systems, including system improvements and modifications. This position also provides technical assistance to field personnel in preparing work orders and splicing diagrams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, and material lists for fiber construction projects and work plans.
Analyze fiber attenuation, loss specifications, and dispersion.
Administer and maintain the GIS Fiber Management System for design and fiber recordkeeping.
Maintain customer drop information and port assignments, including recorded light readings.
Oversee workflow procedures and data exchange with affiliates and third parties.
Prepare work orders for overhead and underground line extensions; design conduit plans for underground subdivisions and fiber systems for new developments.
Prepare splicing sheets and related documentation.
Obtain rights-of-way, easements, and permits as required.
Design and field stake work orders and make-ready work.
Review and document end-to-end OTDR fiber tests for acceptance and troubleshooting.
Prepare technical and operational reports related to the fiber distribution system.
Develop and evaluate fiber construction standards and units.
Prepare reports and data for FCC compliance.
Oversee fiber contractors for construction and billing.
Meet with potential commercial and industrial customers to discuss fiber availability and needs.
Assist in negotiating contracts with developers for bulk billing opportunities.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology and at least 2 years of experience in fiber or electric system design, analysis, or drafting, OR
Associate degree in Engineering or Computer Science and at least 5 years of experience in staking and/or drafting, OR
10 years of directly related experience in fiber or electric system design.
Skills & Abilities
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to interpret technical journals, specifications, and safety documentation.
Proficiency with computers and common engineering software, including GIS applications.
Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
Must hold and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Ability to work non-standard hours or weekends as needed.
