The Substation Technician is responsible for the inspection, operation, construction and maintenance of the Cooperative’s substations, and electrical line apparatus.
Qualifications
Two years of work experience with high-voltage substations
Successful completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program
IBEW Substation Journeyman status required before hire date
Union membership is required within 30 days after hire date as a condition of continued employment
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) and associated Medical Examiner’s Certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Basic computer knowledge and experience
Knowledge of substation operation, maintenance, repair and construction policies and practices; principles of electricity; special tools and equipment; diagnostic equipment and procedures.
Ability to routinely lift 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds, frequent carrying, pushing, pulling, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities
Install, maintain, and operate transformers, regulators, load tap changers, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, reclosers, relays, capacitors, SCADA communications equipment, battery banks and chargers.
Perform testing on substation apparatus such as relay testing & commissioning, transformer turns ratio, megger insulation, battery load testing, oil sampling, and other analytical tests as assigned.
Operate substation equipment, including switching and
Inspect electrical facilities for conformance with specifications and safety
Perform relay panel
Install substation conduit systems, ground grids, and
Maintain record of spare equipment, materials, and tools designed for substation construction, maintenance, and repair.
Work occasionally in elevated work areas, that require bucket and boom trucks
Use safety equipment needed to safely work on or near energized conductors and associated electrical equipment.

This is a full-time position that will work under the direct leadership of the Substation Foreman, who will both report to the Sr. System Engineer. This position requires that the employee be available for work outside the normal daily work period. Travel may be required within the four- county service territory during the business day and infrequently overnight. Occasional out of the area travel is expected to attend various activities such as meetings, training and other events.
