Under the supervision of the Manager of Engineering & Operations, the engineer is responsible for providing engineering services on various distribution matters, including consultants, substation design, distribution studies, coordination studies, general distribution planning, specifications and compliance, equipment specification and purchase, and short—and long-range work plans.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Duties:
Assist in the preparation and application of long- and short–range planning of the electric power distribution system plans.
Assist in the proper application of protective equipment, preparing sectionalized studies, and the implementation of necessary construction to protect the electric power distribution system.
Assists with analysis of electric distribution systems, including metering.
Gather/coordinate / maintain outage records and reconciliation/manipulation of associated data sets.
Gather and process reliability information to update existing records, manipulate data sets for analysis, and share detailed reports with a variety of stakeholders.
Provide engineering review and assistance for members.
Prepare routine and special studies and investigations including voltage levels, member voltage and flicker complaints, phase balancing, capacitor and voltage regulator applications, economic sizing of conductors and transformers.
Assist in preparing and applying rate studies, line extension policies, power requirement studies, right-of-way and joint use practices, and other studies as required or assigned.
Support the Manager of Engineering & Operations in the development of electric power supply to new or existing loads.
Monitor the performance of the electrical system and recommend improvements.
Provide engineering support to operations and maintenance of power distribution systems.
Work in a cooperative manner with consulting engineering firms, other consulting firms, other cooperatives, RUS and its representatives, AECC, and all other firms and personnel that will benefit the Cooperative and implement its policies.
Prepare and maintain all necessary maps, records, and engineering data.
Assists in the management of SCADA, GIS, AMI, OMS, and other suite of engineering resources to their fullest potential.
Promote and sponsor effective E&O technology use that can be throughout the entire coop, employees, and members.
Recommend and implement new or improved engineering standards, practices or methods.
Maintain documentation of all engineering tasks performed for future reference purposes.
Prepare engineering reports computations, cost estimates, specifications or other engineering details.
Work in compliance with company policies and procedures.
Support semi-annual engineering section meetings.
Attend seminars, conferences, correspondence, and night schooling – to participate in courses, seminars and special meetings to improve technical skills and management ability.
Keep current on methods and procedures of the position and be available for training in other positions, with the objective of increasing the employee’s value to the Cooperative and in preparation for advancement.
Wear safety equipment and follow safety procedures at all times.
General Duties:
Establishes and maintains an effective professional working relationship with co-workers and all necessary levels of management.
Always maintain a professional image and standards of professional conduct while working in public, representing the Cooperative, and/or conducting business on behalf of the Cooperative.
Plans, schedules, and coordinates tasks, events, and activities to ensure that all work is completed within the necessary allocated time.
Oversees scanning, indexing, and filing of all required records in a manner by which they can be easily retrieved upon request.
Makes his/herself available to assist with power outages.
Maintains a safe working environment.
Protects and maintains member confidence by safeguarding member and employee information.
Provides service to members and fellow employees by answering questions, offering assistance and performing other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Must be a graduate Electrical Engineer from a ABET accredited university, preferably have a BSEE degree.
EXPERIENCE: Must have education and experience or be willing to obtain adequate experience to satisfy the requirements for registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer. A well-developed technical background in the practical aspects of electrical engineering and previous experience in the areas of long-range planning, over-current protective studies, specification and report writing, economic analysis, and other related areas is preferred.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have a thorough knowledge of and be able to apply sound engineering principles as they apply to the electric utility industry.
