Relay Engineer

The Relay Engineer provides engineering and technical support in the areas of relay protection and related control functions. The Relay Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of 1803’s transmission and distribution systems.

Key Responsibilities:

• Designs new and modifies protective relay schemes or any required modifications to existing systems.
• Coordinates protective relays for transmission lines, substations, and generation stations.
• Evaluates all relay operations, troubleshoots relay problems, and recommends required modifications of schemes and/or setting changes. This includes working with technicians to gather data to evaluate problems.
• Performs short circuit and protective relay coordination studies.
• Generates and maintains all appropriate data for short-circuit computer programs.
• Maintains and distributes, as necessary, all current protective relay/device settings.
• Applies and recommends devices needed to analyze system protection equipment; coordinates their installation and use as required.
• Prepares supporting documentation associated with applicable regulatory or industry standards related to system protection.
• Maintains and applies other engineering software and data needed to perform other engineering studies.
• Maintains detailed records of relay maintenance, testing, and repairs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and documentation standards.
• Adheres to safety protocols and best practices to protect oneself and others when working on live electrical equipment. Stay updated on safety regulations and guidelines.
• Participates in emergency response activities during power outages, storms, or other critical situations, assisting in the quick restoration of electrical service.
• Stays current with advancements in protective relay technology, control systems, and industry standards. Implement innovative solutions to enhance system reliability.
• Collaborates with other utility personnel, including engineers, electricians, technicians, and system operators, to optimize system performance and respond to issues effectively.
• Coordinates and monitors contractors’ activities when required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Willingly accepts range of assignments. Exhibits a “can do” attitude toward future challenges.
• Experience with electromechanical, solid state, and microprocessor-based relays.
• Strong working knowledge of transmission, distribution, and substation equipment.
• Working knowledge and familiarity with the engineering principles, practices, procedures, materials, and equipment used in the planning, design, technical and economic analysis, operation, repair and maintenance of protective relays and meters.
• Strong understanding of the principles and methods of power system analysis.
• Ability to analyze and understand a complex electrical circuit problem.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and related programs is desired.
• Knowledge of ASPEN OneLiner or similar program is desired.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency in electronic equipment applications and associated software.
• Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment.

 Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license.

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
