JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the assigned Crew Chief, the Journeyman Lineman will specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution systems. The role demands a combination of technical proficiency, teamwork, and commitment to safety.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs all necessary activities in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution lines while maintaining and enforcing compliance with safety standards and workmanship.
Safely, directs and assists in loading wire and material and getting the truck and equipment ready for daily work assignment.
Keep up to date with and implement the latest safety requirements as per policy. Ensure these rules are followed in the daily assignments and on trouble calls. Must be able to recognize the considerable hazards that exist, including falls, electric shock, electric flash, automobile traffic, and falling objects.
Understands and correctly utilizes all safety and protective equipment.
Reports all hazardous and unsafe conditions to the proper authority as soon as possible and attempts are made to correct the issue.
Possess the ability to climb poles when needed, set and disconnect meters, cutting/trimming right-of-way line for clearance, and operating equipment used on job as necessary, in a safe manner.
Teaches and trains apprentices in the duties and responsibilities of their job.
Maintains valid certification in CPR and First Aid, as well as a Commercial Driving License.
Preserves, promotes and takes an active role in following all Safety Rules.
Performs other duties as assigned in order to fulfill the objectives of the cooperative and the position.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program.
4-5 years of linework experience.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of Accredited Line School Program required.
Completion of a formal apprenticeship required.
Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
Valid Journeyman Certificate required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The job duties of a Journeyman Linemen require lifting more than 75 pounds from floor to waist and waist to overhead, carrying in excess of 75 pounds with both hands, and pushing/pulling in excess of 100 pounds of exertional force. Job duties of the Journeyman Linemen require sustained, awkward positions/postures including bending and twisting at the waist and neck, reaching forward, to the side, across the body and overhead. Additional requirements of the Journeyman Linemen position include forceful grip and pinch, manipulation of small objects, balancing on one or both legs during dynamic activities, manipulation of large objects during activities requiring balance and sustained awkward postures. Ascending and descending poles, operating heavy machinery, including but not limited to bucket trucks, digger trucks, and other machines necessary to execute the duties of the position. Must have the ability to talk, hear, use close vision and to adjust focus.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to rapidly assess changing working conditions for safety. Ability to analyze and solve problems as they are presented. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in verbal and written form. Ability to safely work at elevated heights. Ability to distinguish colors to identify circuits and color-coded electrical connectors. Ability to prioritize work assignments. Ability to analyze voltage recordings, charts, and electric trouble reports to make recommendations on replacing or upgrading equipment. Ability to safely determine the equipment, tools, materials and labor needed to complete assigned projects.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed outdoors in different weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme heat or cold, and darkness. The position of a linemen requires work be completed at great heights, either climbing poles and towers or using elevated buckets on trucks. Per Department of Transportation regulations and the nature of the duties and responsibilities of the position of Journeyman Lineman, this position is classified as Safety Sensitive.
