Lake Region Electric Cooperative (LREC), a member-owned electric utility serving more than 30,000 member-consumers in the counties of Otter Tail, Wilkin, Grant, Douglas, Clay, and Becker (service territory), is seeking a full-time, seasonal Cable & Pipeline Locator to support safe excavation and protect underground electric and natural gas infrastructure across our service territory.
This position typically works April through November, following our standard daytime schedule, and is laid off during the winter months—while still offering full-time benefits.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you’ll play a critical part in keeping communities safe and ensuring reliable energy service by:
Locating and marking underground electric distribution cables and natural gas pipelines
Responding to Gopher State One Call (GSOC) tickets accurately and on time
Using mapping systems and locating equipment to identify underground infrastructure
Coordinating with contractors, excavators, and internal teams to support safe digging
Maintaining accurate records and documentation of all locate activity
Supporting field operations and assisting with other system-related work as needed
Your work directly prevents service disruptions, protects infrastructure, and supports the safety of the public and field crews.

What We’re Looking For
Combination of education and experience equivalent to 1–3 years in a related field
Experience in construction, field services, utilities, or outdoor work preferred
Ability to read maps and operate tools, equipment, and mobile technology
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in field conditions
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet insurability requirements
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Additional Details
Standard daytime schedule (7:30a – 4p; Mon – Fri) during the working season
Overtime may be required based on workload and operational needs
May support outage or emergency response as needed

LREC offers a generous compensation package including fully paid single coverage health insurance premium, company 401k match and substantial paid time off, including front loading accrual. This position’s starting union wage range is $25.00 - $28.00/hr with a training progression period and wage adjustments to conclude over 2 years. Job offer rates are determined based on the candidate’s specific education, experience, knowledge, skills, and in alignment with market data.

Lake Region Electric Cooperative’s membership is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial, and seasonal homes. The cooperative averages 4.6 members per mile in our 3,200 square mile service territory. We own and maintain 5,600 miles of line.
Because we are a cooperative, margins (or profits) are allocated to members’ capital credits accounts. Periodically, capital credits are returned to members based on the amount of electricity they purchased.
