The Staking Technician works with cooperative members and engineering staff to design, estimate, and prepare electric service construction projects. This position surveys proposed sites, determines the most efficient and economical line routes, and prepares detailed staking sheets, material lists, and cost estimates. The technician ensures all designs meet Cooperative, RUS, NEC, NESC, OSHA, and state requirements, while maintaining strong communication with members and upholding excellent public relations. This is an entry-level role with opportunities for on-the-job training and advancement.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required
Associate degree or equivalent work experience preferred
Previous fieldwork or utility experience desired
Knowledge
Basic understanding of electricity, load requirements, and transformer sizing
Knowledge of line materials, assemblies, equipment, and RUS specifications
Familiarity with NEC, NESC, OSHA, and related codes
Ability to read staking sheets, construction drawings, and maps
Skills & Abilities
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to survey and design efficient, economical electric service routes
Proficient in Algebra, Geometry, and basic computer software for staking sheets and material lists
Competent in using surveying tools and equipment
Detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to work independently
Certifications & Other Requirements
Must maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Ability to become certified in CPR, First Aid, and bucket rescue
Must have reliable transportation to and from work
Capable of lifting 50–100 lbs and working outdoors in various weather and terrain conditions
Availability to respond to emergencies outside normal work hours
