Under the direction of experienced line personnel, the Apprentice Lineman assists with the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution and transmission systems while progressing through a formal U.S. Department of Labor approved apprenticeship program.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with construction of overhead and underground electrical lines (digging holes, setting poles, framing, conductor installation, etc.)
Install, maintain, and remove electrical equipment on energized and de-energized systems (up to 7,200 volts) under supervision
Support system maintenance by repairing or replacing transformers, breakers, regulators, conductors, and related equipment
Respond to outages and assist with troubleshooting, service connections/disconnections, and voltage testing
Load/unload materials, stock trucks, and inspect lines for maintenance needs
Complete required documentation and comply with all safety and regulatory standards
Participate in on-call rotation and emergency response efforts
Perform other duties as assigned while advancing through apprenticeship levels
Apprenticeship Program
This position is part of a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship, which includes:
Structured on-the-job training
Required technical coursework
Progressive skill development and wage advancement
Compliance with Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee standards
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED required
Must possess certificate of completion of Electric Lineman program
Ability to meet MCREA apprenticeship program requirements
Pole top and bucket rescue training preferred (or ability to obtain)
Licenses & Certifications
Colorado Class A CDL (required)
Valid First Aid/CPR certification
Ability to meet DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements
Union membership required upon hire
Skills & Abilities
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, staking sheets, and technical manuals
Willingness to learn RUS specifications, National Electrical Safety Code, and OSHA standards
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to follow instructions
Mechanical aptitude and desire to develop climbing and linework skills
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Work outdoors in all weather and terrain conditions
Exposure to electrical hazards, heavy equipment, and high noise levels
Ability to climb poles and work at heights
Lift 50–75 lbs. regularly (up to 100 lbs. occasionally)
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and use of hands/arms
Additional Expectations
Must reside within 20 miles or 30 minutes of the assigned reporting location
Participate in emergency and after-hours response
Maintain a professional, safety-focused approach at all times
